Welcome to the future with Google’s driverless car

It’s been few years that Google has been working on the development of autonomous cars. Finally, the Tech Giant has rolled out a prototype of its first self-driving car. The car won’t have a steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal. The only manual controls are a go button and an emergency button for panic stops.

Google is planning to build about 100 prototype vehicles. To minimize the risk, the initial 100 prototypes will speed at max 25 mph. According to Google, an array of sensors allows the vehicle's computer to determine its location and surroundings. And it can even detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions.

Google in one of its blog post said that

“Just imagine: You can take a trip downtown at lunchtime without a 20-minute buffer to find parking. Seniors can keep their freedom even if they can’t keep their car keys. And drunk and distracted driving? History.” 

The car looks really adorable with its bubble-shaped design. But on real basis, the two–seat vehicle is small sized which I think could be a bit of discomfort for the passengers.

The driverless cars will use Google’s road maps to get around. The driver will be able to summon the car using a smartphone application, and the car will automatically drive to the destination selected on the app.

Google self-driving car project director Chris Urmson stated, "If the technology develops as we hope, we'll work with partners to bring this technology into the world safely."

Google’s driverless car is step by step climbing the ladder. Slow and steady but gaining the heat now. Outstanding work. Really appreciate it! Still there are so many doubts that comes to my mind. What would happen in case of system failure? The car with cute looks would suit families? But yes, in lieu of, drunk and distracted drivers it is a good alternative. Driverless cars can be a blessing for those who cannot drive, for example through disability or age and so a way of maintaining their personal independence.

Now here is my question to you all. If these driverless cars got functional and affordable would you prefer them over the ones you drive today? No offence, but in my opinion to use the technology and innovate new ones is great but to be handcuffed by it is not worth. By the advent of driverless cars ‘the fun to drive’ experience will be totally lost.
